BREEAM Hea 01 Visual Comfort daylight calculations

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is a widely used assessment method for buildings. This sets the standards for best practice in sustainable design. Established criteria and a scoring system are used to allocate credits under a variety of different categories.

The aim of Hea 01 is to ensure daylighting, artificial lighting and occupant controls are considered at the design stage to ensure best practice in visual performance and comfort for building occupants.

There are three BREEAM credits associates with Hea 01:

  • Glare Control.
  • Daylighting – (two credits).

We can undertake various assessments that form part of the BREEAM process to assist you in gaining the necessary credits to achieve the required BREEAM rating.

To achieve the daylighting criteria the relevant building areas must achieve a good daylight factor. The average daylight factor is the average indoor illuminance (from daylight) on the working plane within a room, expressed as a percentage of the simultaneous outdoor illuminance on a horizontal plane under an unobstructed CIE Standard Overcast Sky.

Walker Energy Analysis uses the latest Daysim DIVA4Rhino software and IES Virtual Environment software to calculate the daylight factor. We have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the latest legislation to help your building comply with the regulations.
