Overheating risk is assessed differently depending on what you’re building. We carry out dynamic thermal modelling in IES Virtual Environment across all of the methodologies below, whichever one applies to your project.
Which Assessment Does Your Project Need?
Homes and residential buildings: assessed under CIBSE TM59, the methodology behind Part O compliance and the standard test for houses, flats, student accommodation and care homes.
Offices, non-domestic and commercial buildings: assessed under CIBSE TM52, testing against three criteria for hours, severity and peak temperature of overheating.
Schools: assessed under BB101, which applies the same underlying approach as TM52 but with limits set specifically for teaching spaces.
BREEAM projects: thermal comfort forms part of the HEA04 credit, and draws on the same TM52 or TM59 modelling depending on building type.
